So, by now you may wondering “where did Timm go?” Timm went to work. And vacation. It was awesome. We went camping, fishing, the whole works. See?

It’s been very hectic as of late and I apologize. I do return today with some good news. There have been some additions to the line-up. I’m still ironing out the details, but it’ll be good. The new line up has an upright bass, a second guitarist, a piano (maybe) and a percussionist. The shows will be minimal due to our work schedules and the fact that we like to do other things aside from stand in front of audiences that don’t really care. There will be a lot of recording, photos beer and a good times. You may hear banjos, mandolins, ukuleles, all sorts of strange instruments from us in the near future. I’m very excited and will slowly introduce each member as we progress. I will also advertise for specific musicians wanted for specific songs, so if you have a singing saw, for instance, stay tuned. You may get a call.

Also looking for an old reel-to-reel tape player to record onto. Will buy for free or rent for free or borrow and never return. For free, of course.

It was killer. I wish you were all there. The crowd was very generous and ready to have a good time. I played my best and (hopefully) did not disappoint. The other act, Tessa Barton, was spectacular. There will be many more of these shows coming. I will be going to bed with a smile on my face tonight.

No, No, No

This song was originally named “New Direction” because I felt I was on to something. I felt that maybe my music was maturing and moving on and (hopefully) progressing. I wrote the first verse about a customer I had. Her name was Myrna and all she did to me for an hour one day was complain about how everything that I had done for her had been wrong. It was non-stop and after a bit, I stopped listening to what she was saying and began writing lines like “if I push her down the stairs, do you think I can still escape?” Not the most Kumbaya moment, but it was a moment nonetheless. Then a natural progression began to take place. Moving from one woman to another, the character in this song solves his problems in a very specific way.

This was the first song I had written and recorded with the intention of keeping it for myself. This was also my first attempt at using household items and special effects for the percussion section. I’m rather fond of this one. So, unless you want to end up in the desert, buried with Cassie and Myrna, you should download No,No,No.

I spend a lot of time writing about other people and characters, so I decided to write one about myself. It’s a simple tune, but effective. The guitar was recorded in my small bathroom, turned waaaay up, to really bring out that Reverb. Everything else is a modge-podge of what I had around the house. Let me know what you think.

Regret is finally here!

Regret is a song I wrote not long ago. I have a tendency to “channel my personal frustrations and feelings through the suffering of characters” in my songs. Which means I write about my troubles by pretending they’re happening to somebody else.

The lyric of this song is about a guy re-hashing old fights with his woman and ruminating on decisions made. While he might not regret the decisions, the aftermath is somewhat harder to come to terms with. Not that this has happened to me, I’m just a writer. Pretending to know things I don’t know.

New Song, Again!

The Fiddler is a tune about not allowing yourself to become complacent. Life changes and it changes quickly. Unless it changes for the better. That crap takes years. The lyric of the song is based upon people I have known or stories I’ve read. The idea of the song came to me while listening to Tom Waits’ “Misery is the River of The World”. This is a terribly dark song, but a good one. Go give it a listen.

I recorded much of this song using my small 2 Watt Danelectro Honey Tone Amp. Great little amp. The percussion on this song is pretty unique. The “kick” sound is me hitting the chair with my shoe. The “Tom” is a wooden spoon against a plastic table. And I can’t tell you what I used for the “ping”. If the pretty lady I live with finds out, she’ll be lit. I’ve always been intrigued with what can be done without a drum set and some ingenuity. Tom Waits’ is a master at this as well.

He’s Still There

I found myself sitting on the front porch with an old woman last year. She was talking about her husband and what he was like and various old lady stories. It was several minutes until I realized that her husband was not out golfing, he was dead. Had been for 20 years, I found out. Speaking as though he was still fresh in her life, made her happy. It would make me bitter. So I wrote a song about a grumpy old man missing his dead wife. Not a happy song, but there it is.

It was my first attempt at piano and it came out amateurish, I’m sure, but I like it nonetheless. The main guitar is my acoustic ran through a Fuzz pedal and my tube amp. It’s a little dirty, but not overwhelming. It’s the thing I love most about this song. The solo is played on a $100 student guitar, but it worked, so I kept it. I know people who have a lot of recording gear and their gear list looks like an advertisement from a studio magazine, but I’m not like that. First off, I’m poor. Secondly, I think it’s disingenuous to spend more time shopping for gear than you spend learning to use the stuff you have. When you use what you have well, you don’t need everything else. So if it sounds lo-fi, it’s because it is. I am accepting donations for new gear, but in the meantime, I’ll use what I have.
